Warlock Subclass – Draconic Patron [5.24 update]

Hello, everyone! This week’s subclass article is a 5.24 update of the 2021 Dragonbound Warlock Patron, along with a couple new Invocation options.

Draconic Patron

Serve as an Emissary of Dragons.

Your pact magic is bound to the will of dragonkind. Some dragons utilize warlock servants to collect additional treasure for their hoards, while others may be bound into the service of an imprinted wyrmling until they would mature into the fearsome creatures worthy of legend. Others who wield draconic power may use this pact to forge an apprenticeship, granting their student a fraction of this magic until they prove themselves capable of wielding it independently.

Level 3: Draconic Spells

The magic of your patron ensures you always have certain spells ready; when you reach a Warlock level specified in the Draconic Spells table, you thereafter always have the listed spells prepared.

Warlock Level | Spells

3 | burning hands, detect magic, flaming sphere, locate object

5 | fireball, lightning bolt

7 | conjure minor elementals, ice storm

9 | cloudkill, cone of cold

Level 3: Resilient Self

Your training under a draconic mentor grants you both martial and mental fortitude. You gain Proficiency with Martial weapons and Medium armor.

Additionally, when a creature you can see uses an effect which requires you to make a Charisma, Wisdom, or Intelligence saving throw, you may add 1d4 to the result. If you still fail the saving throw, you may deal Psychic damage to the creature equal to 1d4 + your Charisma modifier.

Level 6: Chromatic Rebuke

When a creature you can see or hear ends its turn, you may use your Reaction to take the Attack action with a melee weapon.

Level 10: Arcane Exertion

You can continue to use arcane power even when your spellcasting reserves are depleted. When you cast a warlock spell, instead of expending a warlock spell slot, you may take a level of Exhaustion.

Level 14: Word of Nullification

As a Bonus Action, you can mitigate all spells cast against you for 1 minute or until you lose your Concentration.

When a creature enters a space within 30 feet of you or ends its turn there, it must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or be unable to cast spells until the start of its next turn.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a Long Rest unless you expend a Pact Magic spell slot (no action required) to restore your use of it.

Eldritch Invocation Options

In addition to the Eldritch Invocations presented elsewhere, the following Eldritch Invocations are available to Warlocks who meet any listed prerequisites.

Hoardkeeper’s Ledger

Prerequisite: Level 5+ Warlock, Pact of the Tome Invocation

A new page appears in your Book of Shadows when you conjure it. With your permission, a creature can take an action to write its name on that page, which can contain a number of names equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of one name).

When a creature whose name is on the page casts a spell, they may expend one of your Pact Magic spell slots instead of one of their own. If they do so, they take Necrotic damage equal to the spell slot’s level, which cannot be resisted, and you gain an equal number of temporary Hit Points.

Pact of the Shears

Your patron once freed you from a situation you once thought inescapable. In doing so, you have learned that their magic now allows you to sever other afflictions that may bind you. If you are under any effects which you can end with a successful saving throw, you may use a Bonus Action to end one such effect.

Tainted Hoard

Prerequisite: Level 5+ Warlock, Pact of the Chain Invocation

When you cast Find Familiar, you grant that summoned familiar the ability to transform into a gold coin bearing a glyph in Draconic. While in this form, the familiar’s telepathic bond to you extends to 1 mile. It retains its normal senses, but gains Resistance to all damage types except Psychic, and cannot move.

As a Bonus Action, you may command the familiar to transform back to its normal form.
