Xil, The Swarm of Horrors

Hello, everyone! For today’s article, I’m introducing the final Primordial Profile for a while – Xil, the Swarm of Horrors. Xil’s motivation is one of animalistic hunger – its influence drives insects berserk. Because of this power, even intelligent insectoid races may feel an inexorable call to worship Xil.

Xil, the Swarm of Horrors

Domain: Fear

The elves tell stories of darker times when the trees of their forests crawled with deadly wasps, when the ground swelled with devouring ants, and when the song of the cicadas became a funeral dirge.

The Swarm of Horrors is a large mud hive occupied by an unfathomable number of insects of all species. The hive guards a thick blue honey, the true form of Xil. In the wars between Primordials and Gods, Xil was sealed in a demiplane teeming with life, where its insect armies slowly consumed everything and then fell dormant.

Cataclysm: The insects of the world become aggressive, swarming and devouring all other forms of life until the world is barren and can no longer sustain them.

Associated Trinkets: A wrought iron honeycomb, a jade figurine of a mantis, a flower whose sent fills animals with anxiety.

1st-Level Conjuration

  • Casting Time: 1 Action
  • Range: 40 feet.
  • Components: V
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute.

You open a tiny planar rift at a point you choose within range. Deadly crystalline wasps fill a 10-foot-radius sphere centered on this point. The sphere spreads around corners. The sphere remains for the duration, and its area is heavily obscured.

A creature entering this sphere or starting its turn there takes 2d8 Piercing damage, and must make a Wisdom save whose DC is equal to half the damage taken. On a failed save, the creature is Frightened for the duration of the spell.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 1st.
